STATUS Lyric draft 2

The story so far

The pre-chorus keeps collapsing. Might be a feature.

Every version of this song dies in the same place: the eight bars between the second verse and the chorus. The lift never lifts. I've rewritten the chords five times and the lyric twice, and each fix makes it sound more like every other song.

Current theory: the song doesn't want a pre-chorus. It wants a collapse — a bar of near-silence, a dial turning between stations, then the chorus arriving like a signal found. The title came from that image before the music earned it.

So draft three will try the bravest dumb thing: cut the section entirely and let the bottom drop out. If it doesn't work, the file goes back in the drawer with the other beautiful failures.

“Not every song is stuck. Some are just interrogating you.”

Verse 1 — keeper?

Static on the line at quarter past two half past nothing

Your voice comes through in weather, mostly

I turn the dial slow, I turn it back to you

→ verse works. do not touch the verse.

The collapse — unsolved

And I'm running, and I'm running to the sound

And the static clears and you are still around

→ both lines cut. trying: 1 bar of silence + dial noise.

[ signal found — chorus enters cold ]

Two dead lines and one stage direction. Draft three starts here.

Verse and a mumbled placeholder where the pre-chorus should be. You can hear me stop, sigh, and keep going.

Open questions

  • 01. Silence or noise in the gap bar?
  • 02. Does the chorus enter cold or fade up?
  • 03. Is this even a guitar song — or piano?
