The story

The wrong chord was righter than the right one.

It started as a warm-up figure on the old upright — a Gsus2 I kept catching with an extra 9th because my fourth finger is lazy. After the sixth repetition I stopped correcting it. The lazy version had gravity; the correct version had manners.

That voicing became the harmonic fingerprint of the whole record. Every other song on Low Light had to be checked against it: does this belong in the same room as that chord? Two songs got rewritten. One got thrown out.

The lyric came from the kitchen table, no headphones, the demo mic picking up the refrigerator. “Carried your ember” was originally “borrowed your lighter” and thank goodness somebody said so.

“Play the mistake until it sounds like a decision.”

Lyric file Chorus, draft 6 of 7

Verse 1

Kitchen light and winter, dishes in the rack

Kitchen light and winter, kettle going black

You hummed in G minor like you owned the place built the place

→ the whole song is in this room, don't leave it

Chorus

Carried your ember down to the riverbed

Left it on the sill when I lost the thread couldn't find my way back

Now everything I write glows half in the dark

→ Gsus2(add9) under every line, no exceptions

Draft six of seven. The “lighter” line survived five drafts too long.

Fridge hum in A. You can hear the chair creak before the second verse. Both stayed in the demo; neither made the record.
