The memo is timestamped 3:17 a.m., October 14th. Rain on the window, guitar still in DADGAD from the night before, and a chorus that wanted to land on the four chord instead of the five. I sang it wrong twice and the wrong version was better, so the wrong version stayed.
The verse arrived more or less whole — porch light, unlatched gate, somebody waiting. The bridge refused for three weeks. Fourteen discarded middles, one co-write afternoon with Ellis Ward, and finally the melody he'd been humming over coffee. We tracked it the same day so nobody could overthink it.
Then the BigSky pedal glitched during the bridge take and bloomed into that shimmer. We kept the glitch. It's the first thing people hum back at shows.
