DRUMS One mic

The story

Seven-four that doesn't feel like seven-four.

The riff fell out in seven and I nearly straightened it — several co-writers suggested 4/4 “for everyone's sake.” But the limp was the personality. So the job became camouflage: a driving eighth-note pulse that carries the ear straight across the odd bar so it feels like a long four.

Drums are a single ribbon mic across the room, played with brushes on a phone book for the verses. Yes, really. The phone book is credited in the liner notes as “percussion consultant.”

It's the fastest song here at 110 and the one that moves bodies first, thinks later. Every set since August has closed with it.

“If the odd meter shows, you've mixed it wrong.”

Lyric file Verse 1 + chorus, road-tested

Verse 1

Count the meridians between us till they blur

Seven steps to every measure of the leaving

You navigate by stars neon, I navigate by her

→ the meter joke stays buried. nobody counts at shows.

Chorus

Meet me on the longitude where the night runs long

Where the band plays one more seven and the crowd plays along

And we don't get home till the eighth bar of the song

The “seven/eighth bar” wink survived every rewrite. The crowd shouts it now.
