The story

Three months of rewrites. The first bridge was still better.

This one fought for a whole season. The verses came fast and then sat untouched while I rewrote the bridge eleven times — each version cleverer and deader than the last. Modulation, key change, spoken word, a full stop. Everything but the thing.

In September I dug out the very first bridge sketch from June, the one I'd dismissed as too plain. It fit like it had never left. Three months of work to walk all the way back to the start, which is either failure or the entire job description.

Lesson filed: when the clever version and the plain version disagree, master the plain one and let the clever one haunt the B-side.

“The song knew. I was just the last to find out.”

Lyric file The restored bridge + final verse

Bridge — as first sketched, June

Say it plain, say it like a headline like a hymn

The quiet weighs the most when you carry it in

→ eleven versions later: back to this, one word changed.

Verse 3 — the keeper

We stopped performing quiet, started keeping house with it

Set a second plate for all we never say the unsaid

And the heft of it held us like a held note holds

Eleven drafts. The file names tell the whole story: bridge_final, bridge_final2, bridge_USETHIS, bridge_june_original.
